Julie S. McBarron - Studio Owner/Director                

Ms. McBarron has 40+ years of combined dance and teaching experience. She graduated from Oakland University in Rochester, MI with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Formerly a marine biologist and environmental educator, she acquired Dance Arts Studio in 1999 to pursue her passion for dance education. Seeing the need for Performing Arts education in Carteret County, she expanded the studio in 2012 and became Dance Arts Studio Academy of Performing Arts. She is a former member of the Detroit City Ballet and the Oakland University Dance Company and is classically trained in the Cecchetti Method of Ballet.


Hazel Collins - Dance Instructor

Ms. Collins has over 45 years of combined dance and teaching experience, and is also a certified ZUMBA instructor. A native New Yorker, she was a dance major at the Lenard Davis Center for the Performing Arts, CCNY, and a modern dance scholarship student of Merce Cunningham. In addition to ballet and tap, she was trained in the Martha Graham and Lester Horton techniques of modern dance. She is a former member of the Chuck Davis African-American Dance Ensemble and has traveled to West Africa to study the native dance, music and culture. She also studied Caribbean dance and taught at the Jamaica School of Dance, and has performed on and off Broadway.


Katie Dixon - Musical Theatre/Voice/Dance Instructor

Ms. Dixon has 25 + years of experience in all aspects of the stage and theatre. She has been in over 30 musical theatre productions. Locally in Carteret County, she played “Maria” in The Sound of Music, and has also been seen in August Osage County, God of Carnage, and Broadway at Its Best.  Choreography and directing credits include Carteret County Theatre’s "You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown" and "Broadway at Its Best" 2011-2012. Katie grew up in Philadelphia where she studied tap and jazz for 17 years, and took master classes in voice, acting, dance, and choreography.  She also took classes in Musical Theatre Education at East Carolina University, and is a former certified Pre-K teacher.


Selena brannan - Dance Instructor

Ms. Selena studied Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary and Pointe with Bonita’s School of Ballet in Monroe, NC. While training there, she assisted and taught dancers age 3-15. She has been a part of Dance Arts Studio summer dance productions for years (Peter Pan, Wizard of Oz, Nutcracker) and taught Ballet and Jazz classes at DAS for 3 summers. She is also certified to teach Christian dance and aerobic workout programs. Major ballet roles include Nutcracker for 14 years (Clara, Russian, Spanish lead, Clara’s Angel, Chinese lead, Snow, Mother Ginger and more), Beauty and the Beast (Babette, Villager), Cinderella, Wizard of Oz and Sleeping Beauty. We are excited to finally have her on staff year-round, teaching Ballet and Jazz.

phil routszong - music Instructor (piano, ukulele, voice)

Mr. Routszong moved from St. Louis to Eastern NC in 1986. He began formal music training at the age of 10. He has been heavily involved in Musical Theatre since the age of 16. While attending college at ECU, he studied vocal performance and music education. Phil was also the Musical Arranger for the Crystal Coast Jamboree for 10 years. He has been a Studio Musician and Producer for area recording studios for over 18 years. Phil is teaching Private Vocal and Piano lessons (Grade level – Adult), as well as Ukulele.
