Julie S. McBarron - Studio Owner/Director/Dance Instructor                

Ms. McBarron has 40+ years of combined dance and teaching experience. She graduated from Oakland University in Rochester, MI with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Formerly a marine biologist and environmental educator, she acquired Dance Arts Studio in 1999 to pursue her passion for dance education. Seeing the need for Performing Arts education in Carteret County, she expanded the studio in 2012 and became Dance Arts Studio Academy of Performing Arts. She is a former member of the Detroit City Ballet and the Oakland University Dance Company and is classically trained in theCecchetti Method of Ballet.


Hazel Collins - Dance Instructor

Ms. Collins has over 45 years of combined dance and teaching experience, and is also a certified ZUMBA instructor. A native New Yorker, she was a dance major at the Lenard Davis Center for the Performing Arts, CCNY, and a modern dance scholarship student of Merce Cunningham. In addition to ballet and tap, she was trained in the Martha Graham and Lester Horton techniques of modern dance. She is a former member of the Chuck Davis African-American Dance Ensemble and has traveled to West Africa to study the native dance, music and culture. She also studied Caribbean dance and taught at the Jamaica School of Dance, and has performed on and off Broadway.


Katie Dixon - Musical Theatre/Voice/Dance Instructor

Ms. Dixon has 25 + years of experience in all aspects of the stage and theatre. She has been in over 30 musical theatre productions. Locally in Carteret County, she played “Maria” in The Sound of Music, and has also been seen in August Osage County, God of Carnage, and Broadway at Its Best.  Choreography and directing credits include Carteret County Theatre’s "You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown" and "Broadway at Its Best" 2011-2012. Katie grew up in Philadelphia where she studied tap and jazz for 17 years, and took master classes in voice, acting, dance, and choreography.  She also took classes in Musical Theatre Education at East Carolina University, and is a former certified Pre-K teacher.

Tracy Hockett - Dance Instructor

Ms. Hockett has over 20 years of dance experience and attended East Carolina University and University of FL. Classically trained in the Russian (Vaganova), French and Italian (Cecchetti) methods of Classical Ballet, she studied with prestigious schools and companies including American Ballet Theatre, The Atlanta Ballet, Dame Margot Fonteyn School of Ballet, and the Georgia Metropolitan Dance Theater. She has also attended numerous Master Classes and summer programs at UNC School of the Arts and is an alumni of NC State Ballet Company. Ballet roles include The Nutcracker (Sugar Plum Fairy, Snow Princess, Snow flake, Arabian, Vivandiere, Chinese), Swan Lake (Odette, Swan, Villager), Sleeping Beauty (Sapphire Fairy, Duchess), Les Sylphides (Sylph in forest) and Four Seasons (Fall).  Most recently, Tracy completed the American Ballet Theatre's National Training Curriculum program in NYC. "Ms. Tracy" teaches creative movement,  ballet, tap and jazz.


Kierston Mayenschein - Piano Instructor

Miss Mayenschein is a native North Carolinian. A classically trained pianist with 10+ years experience, she played for the NAMTA (North America Music Teachers Association) competition and received all "Superior" ratings. In addition to tutoring music students, she also competed in the Miss La Musique pageant and played regularly at the annual Festival of Trees. She is actively involved with her church, the Sanctuary of Newport, where she plays regularly for services, as well as helps direct the annual Christmas program.


Paul Welser - Guitar Instructor

Mr. Welser came to Carteret County by sailboat in 2010 from Northern Michigan via Florida and the Bahamas. A lifelong guitar player and musician he loves to share his musical knowledge with others, both young and old. Paul was also the Music and Worship Leader at the First Presbyterian Church's contemporary worship service, "The Bridge" in Morehead City.
